POWER BUILDING

IMPACT picture 2022.png

IMPACT

Through ÓRALE's,  Immigrants Making Powerful Affirming Change Together (IMPACT) Fellowship project, formerly detained community members and non-detained individuals  facing deportation proceedings will strengthen their community organizing and leadership skills, deepen their political consciousness, and develop a public awareness plan, with the ultimate goal of building collective power and advocacy to call for the end of immigrant detention centers  in the U.S. Our project  will build and foster a nuanced approach to political education where fellows will develop a critical analysis of the far reaching impact of the criminalization of immigration and the imprisonment of the people of color nationally. The individuals who are selected as part of the 2022 cohort will also have the opportunity to build community amongst each other, share power building resources, and support base building in local communities while also increasing public awareness, knowledge, and engagement  in the longstanding  fight to end detention nationwide.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Órale’s Escuela De Liderazgo Comunitario will conduct a series of political educational workshops inspired by the school for Unity and Liberation, SOUL . Workshops seek to invoke civic engagement amongst low income immigrant women living in Long Beach. These workshops will take place in the evenings once a month between February and November 2020. Through these workshops community members will learn and discuss the concept of identity and how it shapes our daily life in relation to power and its effects. We will be discussing economic inequality, sexism, homophobia, and the structure of the education system for youth. Participants will have the opportunity to gain organizing tools that they will be able to apply to local and state advocacy campaigns. There will be groceries given out at the end of each meeting for participants.
